Times onlines transfer rumours
Rafa out to hijack Sylvain– Daily Mirror
Rafael Benitez, the Liverpool manager, is set to battle it out with Aston Villa for the signing of Sylvain Distin from Portsmouth.
Gary Jacob’s verdict: Liverpool offered around £2million at the start of June, as reported in Window Watch, but it would probably take an offer closer to £4million to sign the defender.
Hughes sets sights on Young – Daily Express
Mark Hughes, the Manchester City manager, is lining up an £18m swoop for Ashley Young, the Aston Villa winger.
Gary’s verdict: Villa would only consider an offer in excess of around £30 million, which City could afford, but where would be play?
Wenger sweats as Chamakh plays the field – Daily Express
The Arsenal manager is facing a striker crisis after Marouane Chamakh, who he hoped to sign as a replacement for Emmanuel Adebayor, revealed Tottenham, Fulham and Blackburn are chasing him. To add to Wenger’s worries, AC Milan are poised to make a £10m bid for Nicklas Bendtner.
Gary’s verdict: The other clubs have been chasing him this summer but Chamakh would move to Arsenal given the opportunity. But will he get it? Wenger likes Bendtner and thinks he has potential, contrary to the view of some fans.
Makh my day – The Sun
Steve Bruce, the Sunderland manager, is also lining up a £10m bid for Chamakh.
Gary’s verdict: If Arsenal don’t try to sign Chamakh, the forward will probably have to either swallow his pride and move to a non-Champions League club or stay in France for another season. He has twice got cold feet on a move to Lyons, although he was much younger.
Eidur’s seeing a Zola chance – Daily Mirror
Eidur Gudjohnsen, the Barcelona forward, is thinking over a move to West Ham, while the club’s winger Julien Faubert is wanted by Schalke 04.
Gary’s verdict: Gudjohnsen earns around £90,000 a week and West Ham do not want to pay even half as part of a loan deal. Barcelona are so far unwilling to pay the rest. Someone has to move for this deal to go through.
Pompey move for Ricketts – Daily Mirror
Portsmouth have made a £2m offer for Sam Ricketts, the Hull defender.
Gary’s verdict: Makes sense after the departure of Johnson but Tottenham have offered Pascal Chimbonda to Portsmouth as part of a possible deal for Peter Crouch.
Brown sets sights on Cardiff pair – Daily Mirror
Phil Brown, the Hull manager, will make a £7m offer for Cardiff City midfielder Joe Ledley and striker Ross McCormack.
Gary’s verdict: Cardiff might regret not selling Ledley for £6million to Stoke on the last day of the transfer window last summer, as he now only has one year left on his contract. Ledley is likely to leave, but Cardiff might dig their heels in about McCormack.
