Hondurian Wilson Palacios wants Honduran derby in Beijing
Palacios wants Honduran derby in Beijing
After tackling Barcelona and Celtic at Wembley, Tottenham Hotspur fly out to Beijing, China, for the Barclays Asia Trophy on Monday. They take on West Ham United on 29th July and will then face either Hull City or Beijing Gouan in the final on 31st July.
And Palacios is hoping Tottenham take on the home side in the second match as that will mean a midfield clash against Emil Martinez, who is now plying his trade with Beijing Gouan in the Chinese Super League.
Martinez, 26, has played over 50 times for Honduras and the pair go back a long way both as rivals in the Liga National in Honduras – Wilson played for Olimpia, Martinez for Marathon – and youngsters progressing through the international ranks for Honduras. They were born less than 50 miles apart.
“I know Emil very well,” explained Wilson. “We played together from the junior national teams all the way up to the national team and of course against each other in the Honduras League. Hopefully we’ll get the chance to play each other. It will be great to see him. It will also be a little strange to play against my friend so far away!”
Unlike the majority of his team-mates at Spurs, a trip to China will not be a new experience for Palacios. He played for Honduras in a 1-0 win against China in Guangzhou in February, 2006.
“I was enchanted by China and the fans love their football,” he added. “It’s a sport on the up and up and there are now a number of foreign players playing in China, including my friend Emil and other Hondurans as well. I’m looking forward to going out there again and I’m sure it will be a great tournament.”
