Tottenham have confirmed their interest in Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, after the striker shunned a switch to Stuttgart.

The Dutch international is surplus to requirements at Real Madrid, despite only joining the Spanish giants in January this year.

Spurs had looked as if they had missed out, as Stuttgart agreed a deal with Real Madrid worth around £15million, but now Huntelaar is heading back to Spain after rejecting the offer from the Bundesliga side.

Horst Heldt, Stuttgart general manager, said on the club’s website: “We were willing to sign Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, because his qualities would be of great benefit for our team.

“But we are not willing to accept Klaas-Jan Huntelaar is putting us off.”

Stuttgart’s failure is now expected to signal a swoop from Spurs, after their boss Harry Redknapp confirmed that the 25-year-old was his top striking target.

“The lad is a very good goalscorer and I’m still interested in him,” said Redknapp.

“I know of Stuttgart’s involvement but I’m hoping we will still be able to do something.

“There’s a lot of talk about who I may or may not be after but Huntelaar is the one I like.”

Arsenal have also been credited with an interest in the player, who will link back up with Madrid on Thursday, but the Spanish club are hoping to have secured a sale before the end of the month.

The Arsenal manager is facing a striker crisis after Marouane Chamakh, who he hoped to sign as a replacement for Emmanuel Adebayor, revealed Tottenham, Fulham and Blackburn are chasing him. To add to Wenger’s worries, AC Milan are poised to make a £10m bid for Nicklas Bendtner.
